Blue Ridge Parkway to West Virginia

While a Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway Ride is fantastic, much off the best riding is off Parkway. If you have enough time, venture off Parkway for a GREAT Trip.

Try the following ride 223 mile Ride on the way back from the Dragon if you can.

Ride Map

1) Ride the best of the Parkway from Cherokee north until you pass Asheville & Mount Mitchell. Turn north on NC 80 and follow it to Route 281 Roan Mountain. Try to time it so that you do not reach the summit during a thunderstorm with lightning strikes like Debbie & I did!

2) Turn east and ride NC 194 (nice road!) to the Mast General Store.

3) Turn north and ride Route 421 (The Snake). This is a GREAT ride. Ride both halves and stop in the middle at the Shady Valley Country Store.

4) Turn Northeast on TN Route 133 and ride past Backbone Rock

Turn right in Damascus, VA and ride GREAT VA 58 (The Python). You will love this road.

5) Turn north on Route 16 to Marion, VA. The next stretch of VA 16 is know as "The Back of the Dragon" and is one of the very best roads in the East. Do not miss it!

6) This ride ends in Tazewell, VA. You are now on the doorstep of West Virginia. From here I suggest continuing north on Route 16 and visiting the Beckley Coal Mine, the New River Gorge Bridge, and then turning northeast on amazing WV Route 20 and ride toward PA.

If you do not have enough time for West Virginia after riding "The Back of the Dragon" then I-81 is nearby to get you home quickly.
