This 193 mile ride (see
ride page) begins at the
Waterfront Grille on the Erie Canal in Herkimer, NY. 90
Erie Canal Cruises leave from the Grille every day at 1pm
and 3pm ($19).
Cross the Mohawk River to Ilion and ride
Route 51 south through spectacular
Ilion Gorge (video).
Next take some nice rolling farm roads over to scenic Route 20. Ride
route 20 west to Cazenovia and get ready for some fun.
Route 13 (video)
is a great twisty road that goes past gorgeous
Chittenago Falls State Park. It is well worth the $3 to park
and take the short walk over to the Falls:
After riding along Oneida Lake, the ride follows Route 174 south to
the pretty town of Skaneateles. There is metered on street parking
near the gazebo (views and restrooms).
The Sherwood Inn is a good lunch choice and do not forget
Patisserie (see map below):
After Skaneateles, the ride continues west on Route 20 to Auburn on
Cayuga Lake. From Auburn the route follows some country roads over
to Geneva and Seneca Lake. The ride finishes with a nice ride south
on Route 14 along the west shore of Seneca Lake past vineyards (try
HJ Wiemer Vineyards
Vineyards) to Watkins Glen and finally Horseheads.
