Gorham Rides

Gorham, NH is the gateway to the northern White Mountains and gives easy access to the best riding in New Hampshire, northwest Vermont, northeast Maine, and southern Quebec. The region boasts numerous scenic mountains and lakes. There is good riding in all directions with a nice mix of exciting twisties and scenic sweepers.

Best Of The White Mountains

 

The White Mountains have some of the most scenic alpine views in the northeast. There are great roads like the Kancamagus Highway, Hurricane Mountain Road, and Bear Notch Road.

 

 

Ride: (Ride Report) - (Ride Video) - This great 202 mile ride is filled with with 9 Best Of New England Roads and 15 BONE views. Highlights include Reflection Pond (photo), Route 113 and Evan's Notch (photo), Hurricane Mountain Road, Cathedral Ledge (photo), Bear Notch Road (photo), the Kancamagus Highway (photo), Beaver Pond (photo), Kinsman Notch, Route 117 (photo), Franconia Notch (photo), the Cannon Mountain tram, the Ski Museum (free), the Mount Washington Hotel (photo), Saco Lake (photo), the Silver Cascade (photo), Route 302 & Crawford Notch (photo), and Pinkham Notch (photo).

Lunch is at Polly's Pancake Parlor (review). (approx 5 1/4 hours without stops.)

Mont-Mégantic

 

Parc national du Mont-Mégantic (map) ($8.50 CAD), and its Astrolab and Observatory, has some of the best alpine views in Quebec. You can race a bicycle to the top of Mont-Megantic during mid-June's Tour de Beauce or you can take your motorcycle. :) This ride involves a border crossing so bring your passport.

 

 

Ride: (Ride Report) - This 272 mile ride . Highlights include NH Route 16, NH Route 26, the Balsams (photo), NH Route 145, Beaver Brook Falls, Mont-Megantic, ME Route 27, Chain of Ponds (photo), Flagstaff Lake (photo), Rangeley Lake (photo 1) (photo 2), and ME Route 16.

Lunch is a picnic at the Observatoire Populaire on Mont-Megantic. Get sandwiches at the Moose Muck Coffee House or Subway in Colebrook or at Epicerie S.N. in Notre-Dame-Des-Bois, Quebec.

Northern Vermont

 

Northeast Vermont , also known as the North East Kingdom (NEK), is sometimes referred to as "the last of old Vermont." It combines curvy roads with pretty & remote countryside. Highlights include VT Route 102 along the Connecticut River, VT Route 114 along the Canadian border, VT Route 111, VT Route 5A, Lake Willoughby, Burke Mountain ($5), Crawford Notch, and Pinkham Notch.

 

 

Ride: (Ride Report) - This 231 mile ride features some beautiful Northern Vermont scenery. Highlights include Route 102 along the Connecticut River, Route 114 along the Canadian Border, Willoughby Falls (photo), Lake Willoughby (photo), Burke Mountain ($5) (photo), Crawford Notch (photo), and Pinkham Notch (photo).

 

Lunch is at the Miss Lyndonville Diner or Cafe Sweet Basil (Wed-Fri). (approx 5 1/2 hours without stops.)

Southern Loop

 

Mount Washington is a glorious ride on a nice day. Routes 153 and 113 have some great curves. Winona Road and NH Route 118 will leave you breathless.

 

 

Ride: (Ride Report) - This 230 mile ride visits the summit of Mount Washington (photo) and the Lakes Region. Highlights include Mount Washington, Route 16 through Pinkham Notch (photo), Route 153 south past Eaton Village Store, NH 113A, NH 113 along Squam Lake, Winona Road, W Shore Road along Newfound Lake, Route 118, (photo), Franconia Notch (photo), and NH 115.

 

Lunch is at Hart's Turkey Farm in Meredith. (approx 6 hours without stops.)

Rangeley

 

Rangeley Lake and Mooselookmeguntic Lake in Maine are incredibly scenic. Routes 16, 17, and 4 are great riding roads with stunning scenic overlooks. Sugarloaf Mountain is a prime ski mountain with above the treeline skiing. Route 26 is a pretty road that travels through Grafton Notch State Park.

 

There are 2 versions of this ride:

 

1) The regular version:

Ride # 1: (Ride Report) - This 266 mile ride includes everything in the great ride above and adds the Route 16, Route 142, Route 4 loop around Sugarloaf Mountain, Mount Abraham, and Saddleback Mountain. Route 4 is an especially nice ride.

Lunch is at the Parkside & Main Restaurant (Review) in Rangeley.

2) The shorter version:

 

 

Ride # 2: - This great 188 mile ride starts with a pretty Androscoggin River run on Route 16 before turning east into Maine. Route 16 skirts the top of Mooselookmeguntic Lake and Rangeley Lake. Next turn south on Route 4 and and stop at the beautiful scenic overlook of Rangeley Lake (photo 1) (photo 2). After the overlook, the route follows the south shore of Rangeley Lake before turning south on route 17 to the Mooselookmeguntic Lake overlook at Height of Land (photo). Contine south on 17 past Beaver Pond (photo) and Coos Canyon (photo). Turn west to Maine Route 26 and ride south through Grafton Notch State Park. Turn east on Route 2 and ride past Reflection Pond (photo) and on to the hotel.

Northern New Hampshire

 

The Northern White Mountains have some of the best scenery in the Northeast. Highlights include Route 16, Route 26, Route 102 along the Connecticut River, Route 142, Crawford Notch, and Pinkham Notch.

 

 

Ride: (Ride Report) - This fun 205 mile ride visits the Best of the Northern White Mountains and crosses over to fabulous Route 102 in Vermont. This ride features some of the best high speed sweepers in New England. The route features 6 Best Of New England Roads and a ride along the Canadian border. Highlights include Route 16 along the Androscoggin River,  Route 26, the Balsams Hotel (photo), Route 145, Beaver Brook Falls, the great Vermont Route 102 along the Connecticut River, Route 142, Crawford Notch (photo), and Pinkham Notch (photo).

Lunch is at Smokin T's BBQ or Scorpio's Pizza (review) in Lancaster, NH. (approx 5 hours without stops.)

The Sebago Lakes region has some nice riding and some great scenic views.
