Miscellaneous
I've never found a bad campground on this road.
Traffic in the summer, especially on weekends, can be a bear.
- (WorcesterFJR)
Watch out for the bear and the deer. I musta seen 30-40 deer and a
coupla bears crossing the road while I was down there.
The BRP is lined with mountain laurels and rhododendron which must
bloom sometime in June. Most of the flowers had gone by when we saw it
the first week of July. I would imagine that is a sight to behold. -
(Steve C.)
Some friends went down
there last year in April and encountered snow and frost in
mountains... had to wait till about 11am for the temps to rise and the
roads to melt before riding for the day. So have fun, but expect some
weather variety in the mountains!!
Early June you will still be ahead of the crowds. We went the first
week of June this year and the roads were gloriously clear of too many
bikes. We were told that as soon as schools start getting out, the
roads get crowded... beginning the middle of June.
It's a great vacation! Be sure to do the Cherohala Skyway, I loved
that road better than the Dragon. It's nearly 50 miles long and has
gorgeous sweeping curves as well as the tight ones. Great views too.
And then be sure to take the side road to Bald River falls at the base
of the road on the Tellico side of it.
A word of note about the Cherohala: there are two spots on the road
where you will see SlOW painted on the road. These two spots are where
more motorcycle fatalities have occurred than anywhere else on the road
because the turns get tighter radii as you negotiate them and it takes
bikes by surprise. It is the guardrail that takes people out. I
remember seeing the painted warnings, but only learned why after
getting home. Might be more of a squid warning, but any bit of info
helps I think!! - (Kate)
