High Peaks Ride Preview


This 222 mile ride starts with a scenic ride on Route 86 along the West Branch Ausable River to the base of Whiteface Mountain. Whiteface Mountain is where the downhill skiing events were held at both the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. Take a look at the summit because that is where you are going next:

Continue a little further north on Route 86 to Wimington. Turn left on Route 431 (BONE Route) and begin climbing to the top of Whiteface Mountain. This road is newly paved so enjoy this magnificent ride to the top. (Hours: May 13 - June 13 2016 = Friday-Monday 8:45-5:30. Open daily June 17 - Oct 10 8:45-5:30.)

Once you reach the summit, there is a choice between an elevator or a long series of stairs.

Descend back down Veteran's Memorial Drive and then turn left on Essex CR 18 (Whiteface Mountain Road) to the BONE view at Franklin Falls Pond:

Follow Franklin CR 48 (River Road) to Bloomingdale then Route 3 to Saranac Lake. Pick up  Franklin CR 18 (Forest Home Rd) and follow this nice curvy road through the woods to Lake Clear. Turn south on Route 30 and enjoy a gorgeous curvy ride along a series of pristine Adirondacks Lakes. Admire Best Of the NorthEast (BONE) views at Horseshoe Pond, Fish Creek Pond, and Simon Pond.

Continue South on Route 30 past great views at Tupper Lake:

Ride east on Route 28N past Shaw Pond:

Route 28N follows the southern boundary of the high peaks and then turns south and becomes a prime curvy motorcycle road. Turn left at the Morse Memorial Highway and stop at the Olmstedville Dam for a great view.

Get your riding boots on because there is great riding ahead. Irishtown Road/Hoffman Road (Route 24) is one of the best roads in the Adirondacks.

Catch your breath and get lunch at Flanagan's Pub in Schroon Lake.

Ride north on Route 9 and turn right onto fabulous, twisty Ensign Pond Road (Route 4). In Moriah Center, turn left on Witherbee Road and follow it to Witherbee. Turn left on Tracy Road (Route 6) which is one of the very best twisty roads in the Adirondacks.

Follow Route 73 into the heart of the Adirondacks toward Keene. Take a right on Route 9N and then a left onto super twisty Hurricane Road. Resume riding north on Route 73 past Cascade Lake to the hotel in Lake Placid.
