Westfield, MA to Liberty, NY Ride Preview

This 162 mile ride begins in Westfield, MA and visits MA Route 23 and Blandford Stage Road (Best Of the NorthEast Roads) over hills, through forests, and past farms. The ride travels through Great Barrington and on into NY State.

Stop at the Martindale Chief Diner for lunch. This is a classic American diner with good diner food.

After lunch, cross the Hudson River and ride through the town of Catskill - now the real fun begins.

Cauterskill Road (BONE Road) is a hidden Catskills gem that most riders miss. It snakes through forest and along Kaaterskill Creek and Cauterskill Creek until finally breaking out into the open along a series of chicken egg farms. The pavement is not perfect, but it is a great ride.

Turn south briefly on NY Route 32 and then turn right onto Bogart Road. Bogart Road is a great little wooded & curvy shortcut to NY Route 23A.

Turn right on NY 23A (BONE Road) and start climbing on this iconic Catskills Road. The road begins twisting along the Kaaterskill Creek as it snakes through rugged stone canyons.

Be careful once you reach the hairpin with Bastion Falls on your right and a sheer drop on your left - very nice!

NY Route 23A Hairpin

Bastion Falls

Stop at the parking area on the left a little beyond the hairpin. If you have a lot of time and are adventurous, walk back downhill along the roadway to Bastion Falls. Climb the 1/2 mile trail to Kaaterskill Falls. This double falls was one of the first scenic destinations in the U.S. and was a favorite of the Hudson River School group of painters.

Kaaterskill Falls

Go to the back of the parking area for a great view of Kaaterskill Clove (BONE View).

Continue on Route 23A through the towns of Tannersville and Hunter. If you have time, consider the short detour to North-South State Park and the site of the old Catskill Mountain House (BONE View). This famous hotel was a big deal in its day and had a commanding view of the Hudson Valley. Kaaterskill Falls can also be accessed through this park.

Continue west on NY 23A and then take a left on NY Route 214 (BONE Road) and follow it to Phoenicia. This great road passes the pond at Devil's Tombstone and snakes through Stony Clove Notch. There is a series of great curves as you approach Phoenicia - great ride!

After gassing up at the Valero in Phoenicia, leave westbound on NY Route 28 and then turn left pn Frost Valley Road (Oliviera Rd/CR 47). This amazing road is one of the best in the Northeast (BONE Road). This is 20 miles of great curves through forest, along a river, past farms, with good pavement - riding Nirvana!

Turn right onto Hunter Road and enjoy a peaceful alpine view.

Hunter Road

After relaxing on Hunter Road, get ready for one more series of curves. The ride along Willowemoc Road & Debruce Road (BONE Roads) is a delight as you descent down to Route 17.

Turn left on Route 17 and continue for a few miles to Liberty.

For those staying over in Liberty, NY, a decent hotel is the Day's Inn

A good dinner choice in Liberty is the Yiasou Cafe (review). A place easier to walk to with cocktails is Mr. G's Grille. Try breakfast at the Liberty Diner (review).
