The mountainous western reaches of North Carolina have some awesome roads, including the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway. However, don’t shy away from exploring the smaller local roads intersecting the BRP, as these are generally ascending via many curves and switchbacks up to the ridgeline. NER points out many of the best of these.

The Smoky Mountains and other ridgelines along the Tennessee border provide plenty more roads to explore and curves to enjoy, through the Natanhala and Cherokee National Forests.
