At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size rhineland castle in Alexandria Bay, on picturesque Heart Island. The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise.
This ride across the northern Adirondacks starts by following NY 3 west from Lake Placid. Continue on Route 58, CR-12, CR-22, and NY 26 to Alexandria Bay. Lunch is in Alexandria Bay with a view of Boldt Castle. The return ride follows Route 12, CR-3, NY-58, CR-27, CR-24, NY 56, and Route 3 back to the hotel.
