NER Notes
The Northeast Adirondacks afford great views while descending to Lake Champlain. The views from the Lake Champlain Islands are superb. A highlight is the short Grand Isle to Plattsburg Ferry crossing of Lake Champlain which allows riders to relax for several minutes and take in the great scenery.
This ride starts by following beautiful Essex CR 21, NY 86, and Haselton Road north to Newberry Pond. Follow Route 1 and Route 374 over to the Lake Champlain Islands in Vermont. Stop at St. Anne’s Shrine on Isle La Motte (photo) and grab lunch at their snack area or continue and grab a killer sandwich at Hero’s Welcome while admiring the view. Enjoy the Grand Isle to Plattsburg Ferry across Lake Champlain on the way back to New York. Stop in Plattsburgh at the War of 1812 Museum and view the sites of the naval Battle of Plattsburgh and the Battle of Valcour Island. Leave Plattsburgh and ride scenic Bonne View back toward Lake Placid.
Lunch is at Clare and Carl’s in Plattsburgh.
