NER Notes
Pennsylvania’s Coal Region has a rich heritage of coal mining and is, in fact, home to the largest deposits of anthracite coal in North and South America. Centralia is a borough and a near ghost town in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. Its population has dwindled from over 1,000 residents in 1981 to 10 in 2010, as a result of the Centralia mine fire burning beneath the borough since 1962.
Explore Pennsylvania’s Coal Country. Great roads include PA 554, PA 125, and PA 339. Visit the town of Centralia and see the famous ‘graffiti highway’ on abandoned PA 61, destroyed by the mine fire.
Lunch is at Francesco’s Restaurant (reviews) in Shenendoah.
