NER Notes
Second leg of the journey up to beautiful Quebec City. This ride begins with ME 16 east along the Carrabasset River, before turning north on US 201. This portion of 201 is a Scenic Byway that runs along the Kennebec River as far as the Forks. This part of Route 201 was part of the invasion route that Benedict Arnold and Continental troops followed during their unsuccessful invasion of Quebec in 1775.
Be sure to stop at the Jackman Scenic Vista before arriving at the border. Shortly after entering Quebec, the route jogs west to follow the shores of Lac St-Francois. The town of Thetford Mines soon follows. That town is the seat of Les Appalaches Regional County Municipality and is one of the world’s leading producers of asbestos. Finally the route turns north and follows the Rivière Chaudière to the Saint Lawrence River and Quebec City.
Lunch is at Pizzeria du Boulevard or St Hubert in Thetford Mines.
