The Rangeley and Mooselookmeguntic Lakes in Maine are incredibly scenic. Routes 16, 17, and 4 are great riding roads with stunning scenic overlooks. Sugarloaf Mountain is a prime ski mountain with above the treeline skiing. ME 26 is a pretty road that travels through Grafton Notch State Park. There is are two versions of this route.
The ride starts with a pretty Androscoggin River run on Route 16 before turning east into Maine. Route 16 skirts the top of Mooselookmeguntic Lake and Rangeley Lake. Keep heading east on the ME 16, ME 142, ME 4 loop around Sugarloaf Mountain, Mount Abraham, and Saddleback Mountain. There are some nice views in the Carrabassett Valley. Route 4 is an especially nice ride coming back up to Rangeley for lunch.
Next head back south on Route 4 and and stop at the beautiful scenic overlook of Rangeley Lake. After the overlook, the route follows the south shore of Rangeley Lake before turning south on route 17 to the Mooselookmeguntic Lake overlook at Height of Land. Continue south on 17 past Beaver Pond and Coos Canyon. Turn west to Maine Route 26 and ride south through Grafton Notch State Park. Turn east on Route 2 and ride past Reflection Pond (photo) and on to the hotel.
Lunch is at the Parkside & Main Restaurant in Rangeley.
*** Shorter Route ***
The shorter version of this ride (188 miles) omits the eastern loop after Rangeley and stops for lunch at Smokin’ Good BBQ in Bethel, ME.
