NER Notes
This road recommendation comes with a warning: do not attempt it unless you feel really good about your slow bike handling skills and ability to deal with being out of cell range and away from almost all civilization for a couple of hours. You’ll be in the middle of wilderness for miles, so check your fuel before heading out here. That said, riding this paved road is likely something you won’t forget.
The section west of Forks of Salmon is a narrow one-laner perched on the cliffs above the river, subject to rockslides and erosion of the roadway. It’s twisty, but there’s no leaning on this road. Ride carefully and don’t look down while moving (though the river canyon views are stunning).
After the Forks, you’ll start climbing a bit and eventually reach wider, better pavement before ascending over Etna Pass, crossing the Pacific Crest Trail, and taking in a beautiful mountain vista.
