NER Notes

Saratoga, Rensselaer, and Washington County abounds with rolling farmland that is rich in history. This is the land of the Mohicans that James Fennimore Cooper immortalized in his book. This area was a battleground both in the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Bennington was actually fought in NY and it contributed mightily to the British defeat at Saratoga. The Battle of Saratoga was the turning point of the Revolution and the hero was Benedict Arnold! Rensselaer County has the Taborton Loop which will have your tires smoking.

This rambling ride is great combination of historic sites, scenic farmland, and good riding. There is a twisty warmup on Glenn Falls Mountain Road. Then visit the Saratoga Monument and travel past the Saratoga Battlefield National Historic Site, definitely worth a couple hours to tour the museum and battlefield, if you have time.

Check out the great scenery along the Tomhannock Reservoir and Crystal Lake on the way to lunch in Averill Park. Don’t eat too much because right after lunch is the twisty Taborton Loop. After the loop, the ride follows some nice back roads to the Bennington Battle Park. From there cross four covered bridges on the way to the famous Steininger’s in Salem. The route finishes with a nice ride along Cossayuna Lake and fun runs on Routes 149 and 9L (BONE Roads) to Lake George.

Lunch at The Towne Tavern in Averill Park.
